Artist's Comments

"A lifetime ago,
with frozen eyes they closed the door.
Suddenly I realized what locks are for.
No trusting them anymore,
lights are out.

Empty the stare, innocent and unaware,
dragged out from my home, my lair.
Earmarked me, hurt me, burned me.

The walls around me, eyes surround me,
feed my fear again.
I must be freed or I will die
before the harvest moon, my friend.
I do not have another year in me,
you've gotta set me free.

The dream is alive, I can run up the hills every night,
go around and see another side of the tree.
Freedom has a meaning for me, howl with me.
...

The dream is alive, with the moon on the hills every night,
run around and see another side of the dream.
Freedom has a meaning for me, you can't tame me."

Sonata Arctica - The Cage

:blackrose:

I must say that I'm not sure about this piece at all... I've changed pretty much everything so many times and still it doesn't look right to me. The lightning sort of sucks and I really don't know what to think about the coloration. One thing I'm happy with are the wolves - I had a good time putting different stocks together to create the pack of running beasts. This was also one of my first attempts to paint the fur that actually ended up looking even a bit realistic... :D
Oh well, enough of whining. I love Sonata Arctica's song The Cage and I'm pretty happy how this piece represents my vision of it. I wanted to capture the feeling of freedom and joy. However, I would have loved to get this piece more dynamic and a bit wilder - I feel there would have been so many things left to do but I just don't know what. Something keeps bothering me and I can't quite put my finger on it... If you'll figure it out, let me know. ;)
Despite of all, I really hope you like this piece. For me it tells something about the importance of breaking the cages and making the dreams come true. No matter how bad we fail the dream is still alive.

This is very impressive.
The sky is marvelously done, same with the forest surroundings and ground. The wolves themselves are placed and sized perfectly.
Even the wolves on the cliff are the right size for where they are.
The shadows are placed correctly in the direction of light.
You even put some fluff on the wolves which gives it that dream like feel but still realistic. This is overall a wonderful piece.

There was only two things that seemed to catch my "error" eye. Ha ha. The first was the shadows of the up close wolves. They seem to be a bit sharp rather than blurred into the ground. True the light is sharp in itself, but shadows should have at least a little softness to them. The other thing was the front wolf's back leg. It looks like a stump of a leg. I did see the picture that you got the reference from so I can understand why it looks like that, however you could have defined it more so that it didn't look like a fluff ball.
Other than that, this piece is beautiful and very unique.
Great job. :)

Beautiful artwork! It's really well done and the only thing I could find to critique in this was the the wolf on the clip looking at the viewer(not the one howling but the one below) it looks like it's been pasted into the image and one of his legs(the one facing the moon) looks like it got nothing to stand on... other than that this is an amazing piece! and It took me a while to find anything to critique at all on this^^

hope that helped :+fav:
