Artist's Comments

"He led the way in under the huge branches of the trees. Old beyond guessing, they seemed. Great trailing beards of lichen hung from them, blowing and swaying in the breeze. Out of the shadows the hobbits peeped, gazing back down the slope: little furtive figures that in the dim light looked like elf-children in the deeps of time peering out of the Wild Wood in wonder at their first Dawn. --"

"'Yes, it is all very dim and stuffy in here,' said Pippin.....'Untidy. I can't imagine what spring would look like here. If it ever comes; still less a spring-cleaning.'
'But the Sun at any rate must peep in sometimes,' said Merry. 'It does not look or feel at all like Bilbo's description of Mirkwood. That was all dark and black, and the home of dark black things. This is just dim, and frightfully tree-ish. You can't imagine animals living here at all, or staying for long.' --"

J. R. R. Tolkien - The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Oh my gosh, it's ready. :faint: I must admit that I'm quite proud of this work - it took ages to find the stock images I needed and even longer to build the forest to look like one piece. I stopped counting the layers after 50 but there were certainly pretty many of them. However, I absolutely loved doing this piece and I'm really happy how it came out. It's just yet another work inspired by the most amazing The Lord of the Rings but in my opinion there can't be too many of them.
I've had an idea of Merry and Pippin walking in the Fangorn Forest in my mind for a while but I couldn't find the proper stock for the little fellows. Therefore special thanks goes to my 14-year-old little brother Niklas who agreed to put on cape and play hobbit for me. I think he did some great job posing as both Merry and Pippin.
I truly hope you like this piece! Please take a look at the close-up for details -> [link]

I haven't read any of Tolkien's books nor have I watched any of the movies in the LOTR series, but I can still appreciate an image portraying a story. You know they say a picture's worth 1000 words and this image just stands proof of that. I love everything about it, from the menacing forest background, to the vigilent look on the models faces and the lighting feeling so natural for a manipulation.
I love that you put the scary expressions on the trees that completes the scenery. I even love that tiny lizard you put there that you can't tell from a first look.
I wish there was something negative to critique about it, but I honestly can't find a flaw to it.

Oh how I wish I were a hobbit....

This is such a captivating piece. You've captured the mystery and magic of an ancient forest, just as I imagined Fangorn forest to appear. Its also clear you've spent a great deal of time & put alot of careful thought into the details of the forest and the characters, as every stock image is combined so beautifully, the effect is seamless.
The atmosphere of the scene is fantastic. The back-lighting perfectly frames the two brave figures between the darker shadows above them and the possible dangers they could face on the path ahead...all those dark branches reaching out like sinister hands really enhance the feeling of danger and adventure
Overall, this image really strikes me as being a perfect illustration of a chapter in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings...and I'd love to see more!

As a side note, I have to applaud your brother for the brilliant posing as Merry & Pippin =D Using your own custom-made unique model stock has really given this image a special character all its own
